● The format problem
What is hard about pitching a marketplace in fifteen slides.
Marketplaces are awkward to pitch as PDFs because the unit of value is the network. Supply growth and demand growth are the same story told from two sides, and a static deck has to pick one side per slide. By the time an investor reaches the take-rate slide, they've forgotten the cohort dynamics that justify it. Trust signals for a high-ticket category get crammed into a footnote.
▲ The approach
How we built the Octane deck.
We split the Octane deck into a supply story and a demand story that sit side by side on every screen wide enough to show them, and stack on mobile in the order an investor would want them. The supply side is dealer partnerships, inspection process, inventory mix. The demand side is buyer profile, transaction flow, repeat rate. The two stories converge in the unit economics section.
Trust and verification get their own section. For a marketplace selling cars at this price point, the dealer side and the buyer side both need to believe the platform is doing the work they can't. We made the verification process a visible part of the deck rather than a reassurance paragraph buried under Operations.
✦ Design decisions
4 decisions that shaped this deck.
Side-by-side supply and demand
Two columns on desktop, two stacked sections on mobile. The supply story and the demand story stay paired so the network argument is always visible.
Cohort growth as a chart, not a number
Buyer and dealer cohorts shown as a stacked area chart from month one to today. An investor can see the inflection rather than read about it.
Take-rate transparency
Full take-rate breakdown. Listing fee, transaction fee, financing margin, inspection fee. No blended number that hides the model.
Verification as a section
Inspection process, dealer onboarding, fraud detection. One page. Photographs of the actual workflow. The kind of thing a PDF would relegate to an FAQ.
⚙ When you open the deck
Three things to look for.
01
The two-column layout in the network section. Watch how it collapses on mobile.
02
The cohort growth chart. Stacked area, not a bullet point.
03
The take-rate breakdown. Compare it to a typical marketplace deck's revenue slide.
A note
Octane is a sample deck Top Tier built to show what the Smart Deck format does for a two-sided marketplace. The dealer partners, transaction history and inspection process are illustrative. Real marketplace engagements stay confidential.
